On the streets of Khayelitsha, Cape Town, the struggle for power is a topic of intense debate. This vast township, plagued by high crime, violence, unemployment, and poverty, was established in the mid-1980s during apartheid when black people were forcibly relocated from urban areas. Decades of neglect have allowed gangs and extortion rackets to thrive, bringing terror and misery to millions. Dino and his gang, representative of many young men with limited opportunities, navigate the township with ruthless violence, seeing crime as their only option. At the top of the criminal hierarchy is Mr. X, a figure infamous for extortion, whose operations stifle economic opportunities and deepen the residents’ poverty and fear.
Amidst this bleak landscape, community groups like Langa for Men and leaders like Luyolo offer alternatives to violence. Luyolo mentors young boys and takes them on trips to the ocean, providing hope and an escape from township pressures. Monde, the chairman of the Community Policing Forum, tirelessly advocates for justice, working with the police and community members to improve safety. Complementing his efforts, the women of the neighborhood watch, led by Mamma Fillika, patrol dangerous areas unarmed and unpaid, serving as a powerful deterrent to criminals. This documentary explores the resilience and struggle of those trying to survive in Khayelitsha, highlighting the complex dynamics at play and the ongoing battle between despair and hope.

While some have given up hope, there are those in Khayelitsha actively pushing for change, refusing to sit by and do nothing. This documentary pivots between the 'good' and the 'bad,' weaving together stories from both sides of the law. It explores the resilience and struggle of those trying to survive, as the police do all they can with limited resources. What does it take to survive living in Khayelitsha? This film seeks to answer that question, shedding light on the complex dynamics at play in one of the world's most challenging environments.

Bro, I’m not even in Khayelitsha, I’m in Joburg and I swear, I get robbed every time I step into a tavern. No joke, I’m typing this from my PC because last weekend they took my phone. 💀
And let me tell you about the time I visited a friend in Spruitview for just a week. By day three, these guys broke into the house, put all of us at gunpoint, and tied us up using our shoelaces. 😂 Like, who even does that? We had a little 2-year-old girl with us, and guess what? She thought the whole thing was just a game and started playing with the thugs. 🙃
Ahhh man, South Africa. it’s wild out here.
